Making Rap Beats - How to Get Started

I've been making rap beats and selling them to unsigned rap artists for a while now. Many of my friends ask me how I got started doing this, so I decided to make a guide about it. The reason that making these beats is so enticing is because of the relative simplicity of rap music. Unless you want to just make instrumentals, it's not hard to find someone who will want to spit rhymes over your beats. Just check out MySpace or another music site, they are full of up-and-coming rappers always looking for new tunes and fat beats.
Okay, well the first thing you are going to need to start making rap beats is a program to do so. There are many programs on the market, ranging from free trials to thousands of dollars. I will start with the best of the best. Some of my favorite programs for making beats are Cubase and FL Studio. Cubase is the more expensive of the two, and both are similarly customizable. They are in favor for people wanting to make more advanced types of music, such as trance music. For hip hop music, especially if you are looking to get started, you probably don't want to spend too much money. While FL studio does have a free trial available for download on their website, it does not allow you to save your newly created beats. The full version of this program is unfortunately also hundreds of dollars. I would not suggest buying a program that is that expensive if you are just starting out. Once you master a less complex program, I would however recommend FL Studio. It is what I currently use.
However, as a beginner, if you want to be up and running making rap beats in no time flat, I would recommend a program called Sonic Producer. Developed to be run in real-time in your browser, Sonic Producer is a fully fledged rap beats program. With up to 16 adjustable tracks and tens of thousands of preset sounds, and an interface that is 100% beginner friendly. The advantage over the other programs is that it does not require advanced knowledge of sound and math in order to make nice beats. With Sonic Producer, you can probably make your first rap beat in 5 minutes. The best part is you can then save your beats as mp3s so you can burn them to CDs to show your friends! With it's in-browser technology and mp3 compatibility, not to mention it's affordable as HELL, it's hard to beat Sonic Producer if you want to get started making rap beats.
