When getting started making dubstep it is important to learn how to layer a track.
Every track produced (dubstep or not) will always begin with a foundation and build on it, and that foundation is always the beat. Creating a beat can be done through a simple five step method.
Step 1: Open the music production software and set the tempo. Set the tempo to 140 bpm, this is the standard tempo for dubstep.
Step 2: Locate the drum beat sequencer and pick a drum kit to use. For dubstep beats you want a drum kit with a kick that hits hard and a snare that slightly rings out.
Step 3: Start by adding the kick. For a nice basic beat let's add the kick to the 1st and 11th blocks.
Step 4: Time to add the snare. Let's add the snare to the 5th and 13th blocks. This will give a "kick-snare-kick-snare" kind of beat, this is known as a half step.
Step 5: Finally, add the hi-hat or ride to the 1st, 5th, 9th, and 13th blocks. This will give the beat energy.
It is that simple, give it a play and enjoy the basic beat we have created. Now that the foundation is laid out for the track, it is time to start layering different sounds and instruments on top.
