Beginner Dubstep Production Tips

But you will need a lot of time and patience to get started. Making music like Skrillex does not come in a month's time or even a year. There are so many production techniques out there that many artists use. Some of them are absolute secrets that you may never find out about. The good news is, if you're creative and resourceful, you will find ways to make these sounds.
From manipulating samples to sound design and synthesis and drum programming, you will learn it all. But, if you're first starting out this may be absolutely overwhelming to you. Sitting there on YouTube searching countless hours for tutorials on how to make a Skrillex bass will probably drive you nuts at some point, especially if you don't know what Massive or FM8 is. Most likely, if you're not a producer already, you will have no idea what these programs are! So what to do?
First remember, take one step at a time. Rome wasn't built in a day remember? Get yourself a DAW (digital audio workstation) and a relatively decent computer. You can use either FL Studio, Cubase, Ableton Live, Reason or Logic. There are others out there but these are the most popular.
It would be beneficial to experiment with these programs awhile. Try recording anything just to see how your program works. Once you're semi familiar with how to operate the program without delving into effects and other details, it's time to put your knowledge to the test. Undoubtedly you have been listening to your favorite Bassnectar and Doctor P all year long so you have dubstep oozing out of your pores right? Well, yes, this is true however whenever you listen to your favorite track now, you have to listen to it from a producer standpoint because that's what you want to be right?
Instead of just bobbing your head and enjoying the music, it is now your JOB to pick apart the song and analyze it. The very first thing you should do is analyze the song structure. This is the structure you want to emulate. Intro, Chorus, Build, Drop, Verse, Break etc. Count how many measures or bars for each. If you don't know what a measure or bar is, look it up!
If this is your first, second or even third production, I would highly recommend downloading a loop package with beat loops, synth loops, bass loops etc. Having these loops will give you the semi coherent materials to work with, which is helpful for the beginning producer. This will help you get the feel of this genre down and allow you to learn the different components to making this style of music.
It's like putting together a puzzle using relatively large pieces. There is no shame in doing a 100 piece puzzle before increasing the difficulty and graduating to puzzles of 5000 or more pieces. Trust me, producing a dubstep song, especially with glitches and samples these days, is more like putting together a sonic puzzle than anything.
Once you have done a few of these, then it's time to go on to the next level. Here is where learning your synths and their features come into play however you will probably want to start off by using presets so you won't have to design these sounds yourself. This is the next step. Eventually you will be designing your own sounds, making your own effects, making your own drum samples and banging songs out like Skrillex. Just remember to enjoy the process and have fun!
