So you want to make your own beat right? Of course you do - you're probably just like me and listen to rap and hip hop music every day. It's your main passion and you'd love to take the plunge and begin making your own tracks - but the big question is where do you start?
The good news is I'm going to save you a lot of time and help you along with the first step - you need a hip hop beat maker!
A beat maker basically consists of a sequencer (think of it as your canvas) which is where you arrange your sound samples in any order you wish to create the desired result. These come in both hardware and software versions - major artists will often start making their tracks using software then master it in the studio to give it some polish.
I would strongly advise against thinking about hardware though, unless you have a very rich and generous uncle who is willing to lend you a few thousand dollars for a home studio.
If this is your first venture into the world of beat making I wouldn't waste my time with expensive software packages either (things like Logic, Cubase and Reason). I mean they're great for people who have training in the music production industry but to be honest they are far too complicated for the amateur producer (at least that's what I've found to be true). Not only that but you will be putting a dent of a few hundred dollars in your pocket.
Also, avoid online beat makers at all cost! You won't manage to produce anything of real quality sound as the samples are.mp3 files and are usually limited in number. You may not see the issue with.mp3s as many people listen to them on their ipods but I guarantee you all of the professional tracks you hear will have high quality samples at the core and it's the mastered tracks which are eventually compressed.
So, how do you make your own beat?
Well it's easier than you may think. I managed to find a really cool hip hop beat maker which was so easy to use my first tune was finished in under 10 minutes and best of all it sounded great!
