How to Become a Skilled Hip Hop Beat Maker

You know what a mentor is. It's someone who is where you want to be, and has a level of success that you want to achieve. Someone you look up to for advice and counsel.
As far as your career as a hip hop beat maker is concerned, your mentor is the most important person in your life. You must choose very carefully.
Ideally you would have a mentor you can follow that you can talk to and ask questions to. Maybe you know someone now who is farther along at successfully making and selling beats that will help you and advise you. Or maybe you know someone who knows someone successful in the business, and they would be willing to refer you or even introduce you to them.
As a young, aspiring hip hop beat maker, it may difficult or even impossible to actually communicate with your mentor, because he or she may be a superstar that you obviously do not have access to. That is ok, you can still find ways to learn beat making skills from them and move forward in your career as a result of what you learn from them.
In order to learn from a superstar mentor, you will have to research. Learn about their beat making past. Read everything you can find through diligent study, Google, etc. Listen to all of their music. What inspires them? What is their passion? Your mission here is to do everything possible to intimately know them...yet without ever being able to talk to them.
Study their work ethic and dig in as deep as you can to know them as well as you possibly can through the media and such. Find out what they value in life. Make sure that you are following someone whose values and character are of course at least equal to yours. Just because they are successful at making beats, does not mean they are worth following.
Again, keep this very important point in mind: just because someone has risen to the level of superstar, does not mean they are worthy of leading others. You may find that some superstars (especially in the hip hop beat maker world, unfortunately) are not of the highest character. Obviously you will want to follow the example of someone who has "the whole package". Talent, discipline, hard work, ethics, success, and character and they respect and value people.
The point is, we all need to learn from the experiences of others who have already succeeded at what we are trying to do. A relationship with someone like that will be priceless and you should treat it as such.
