Hip Hop Beat Making 101 - 5 Key Tips to Beat Making

Okay, so if you're interested in getting into the field of hip hop beat making, then your going to need to know how to make beats that artists actually want, or you'll be wasting a lot of your time and money, for nothing. It's a pretty simple concept, but very few people take this into consideration when they decide they want to delve into hip hop beat making. But here are a few little know secrets that will get you pointed in the right direction.
First - Build your beat around the bass line. The bass line is what gives the song it's groove. And as a rule in hip hop beat making, because of the common audience, you need to center your beat around your baseline. Professionals typically start with a drum pattern, then they lay the baseline. This is known as the rhythm section. Everything else is made to compliment the rhythm section.
Second - Learn how to sample. Samples have been a key component in hip hop beat making since hip hop began. But most people don't know why. Samples give a song instant approval, because it sounds so familiar. It registers to the mind as a song that it's already excepted as being good. This helps bypass the natural tendency listeners have to reject a song the first time they here it. It doesn't have to be a voice sample. Most songs have drum samples from the 80's, or melodies from the 70's. It doesn't have to have a voice in it.
Third - Mixing is key. I'm not going to talk about it too much here though. But I will point you in the right direction for some mixing tips in a second.
Forth - Sound quality. This is one factor that most tend to miss, when they jump head first into hip hop beat making. But the human reaction to sound is the most important thing to consider when your producing a beat. It's just natural to reject bad quality sound, there is no way around it. So you need to make sure that you use, professional equipment. Now for most people this is a problem, especially when your just starting off. But there is a solution, especially for up and coming producers. But first lets look at one more tip.
Fifth - Stay trendy. Sounds simple enough, but this is where people die off in the hip hop beat making industry. See hip hop beat making is an ever evolving craft. If you brand yourself as one sound, when the "new" sound comes, your career will end. The money is in longevity, so you need to be versatile. This is another key factor when your goal is to make beats that artist want. You can't get caught up in making beats that you want, because your not buying them, they are. So in order to get what you want, you have to give them what they want. And they will want, what the people want. So if the people want a down south sound, then artists will be looking for dirty south beats. If you can't provide it, then they will find a producer that can. Remember the goal is longevity.
