So you've thought about making beats but don't know where to start? Or maybe you've already invested a little money in gear/ software and don't know what your next step should be? Either way I have some information here that will point you in the right direction.
Learn Your Gear - Get familiar with your equipment and it' settings. It's always good to know where your sounds are and such this way when your listening to other peoples beats you know exactly where to go for the sounds or ones that are similar. I suggest you get familiar with Eq as well.
Pick a genre - Pick 5 beats (tracks) in 1 genre (east,west,south etc). It's better to find the instrumental but if you can't just use the song as is. Try to keep this tracks simplistic as possible but quality.
Study The Tracks - Listen to the same song over and over and write/jot down the sounds you hear in the song. This is very important to your ear training. If you don't know what the instrument is take an educated guess.
Turn On The Gear Activate your hardware or software of choice then find the same sounds that you wrote down (that were in the song). Hopefully you picked a beat that didn't contain too many sounds.
1 Sound at A Time - Lay each sound down 1 by 1, this means each drum hit, snare, piano note, synth and so forth now again if you are just starting out this can be a little frustrating which is why I suggest using a beat with very little sounds (5 max). Using a beat with 5 sounds will allow you to find and start making beats right away.

Now What? - Once you've completed the above step you can begin creating your own material. You will have remade enough tracks to know which sounds work best with one another to sit at any piece of equipment at any time and just bang out out a track. Not only that but you'll be able to listen to an artist and go " i'm going a make a track that fits that artist" without a problem. Granted this is a short article and I'm sure you might have questions or need more in depth training. Some of you might even want to see this method performed not just explained in text.. Not to worry I got you covered!
